Gilbert Arenas is on his way to join Tracy McGrady in China, according to sources close to the former All-Star.

Sources on Monday confirmed a Yahoo! Sports report that Arenas is on the verge of signing a one-year deal with the Guangdong Southern Tigers. Earlier this month, after a similar struggle to secure a guaranteed contract in the NBA, McGrady agreed to join the Qingdao Eagles.

Tracy McGrady has agreed to a 1-year, veteran-minimum deal with the Atlanta Hawks, a source close to the situation told ESPN’s Stephen A. Smith.

McGrady, a 6-foot-8 shooting guard, played for the Detroit Pistons last season. He averaged 8.0 points and 23.4 minutes per game for the Pistons, appearing in 72 gmaes and starting 39.

Beyond Boston’s need for size this offseason, its other needs include: a veteran ball-handler, bench scoring, and a player that can defend on the wing. McGrady does all of that — all to a decent level at this point of his career — and at a potential bargain basement price.

After being shut down for the preseason after playing only eight minutes, McGrady finally returned to practice Sunday.

He confirmed that he will be limited to around 15 minutes per game for the time being. McGrady, 31, has hardly played the last two seasons because of a left knee that was surgically repaired in February 2009.
