The Wolves are pursuing Pau Gasol and are offering Derrick Williams in the process, according to two sources.
Minnesota offered Derrick Williams to the Bobcats for the No. 2 overall pick in hopes of helping to acquire Gasol.
The Wolves want to pair Gasol with Kevin Love and Ricky Rubio.
The Minnesota Timberwolves and star forward Kevin Love have agreed to a four-year contract extension worth between $60 million and $62 million, beating Wednesday’s midnight ET deadline.
Love had originally sought a five-year deal but backed off that request and instead insisted that the final year of a four-year deal would be at his option.
Sources close to the process told ESPN.com that the All-Star forward was determined to have the ability to opt out and become an unrestricted free agent after three seasons if he didn’t like the direction of the team.

New Jersey Nets point guard Deron Williams has chosen to sign with Jeff Schwartz as his new agent, according to sources with knowledge of the decision.
The decision to sign with Schwartz’s Excel Sports Management means that the top three free agents in the summer of 2012 will all be represented by different agents.
Orlando’s Dwight Howard is represented by Dan Fegan, New Orleans’ Chris Paul signed with Leon Rose last summer and now Williams is aligning with Schwartz, whose client roster includes top veterans Paul Pierce, Jason Kidd, Tyson Chandler and Lamar Odom, as well as young stars Blake Griffin and Kevin Love.
Considered a weaker draft in terms of players, this year’s talent grab will not suffer from big names in trade talks.
Pau Gasol, Andre Iguodala, Monta Ellis, Chris Kaman, Jonny Flynn and Kevin Love are just a few of the names that have been mentioned. At least give David Kahn credit for being aggressive. He got Rubio when no one ever thought he would.
Now, Kahn is shopping the second pick in the draft and there also appears to be some truth to the rumor that Kevin Love could be had for the right cost. Timberwolves are interested in teaming Rubio with another Spaniard, Pau Gasol, and there are rumors a proposed trade had Love and the second pick in the draft going to L.A. for Gasol.
Kevin Love has been named the league’s Most Improved Player award. Two people with knowledge of the announcement told The Associated Press that Love will be given the award at a news conference on Thursday afternoon.
The people requested anonymity because they were not authorized to speak publicly about the award before the announcement.
Love averaged 20.2 points and led the NBA with 15.2 rebounds per game this season for the Timberwolves.
“They’re all on the same page, everybody … When they break from the huddle, everybody’s in. You can tell everybody has the utmost respect for each other and they’re all in it to win it. In that regard, I envy that. I salivate for that. I like that a lot.”
The NBA’s leading rebounder offered another estimation of the Bulls to Jerry Zgoda of the Star Tribune: “They’re pretty good … I was saying that in the third quarter. They’re pretty damn good.”
Minnesota Timberwolves All-Star Kevin Love left the team’s 127-95 loss to Sacramento in the second quarter with an injury to his left groin.
Love appeared to get injured early in the second period when he winced in pain and had trouble getting up and down the court. He went straight to the locker room when he was replaced with 3:18 to play in the first half and did not return.
Love was scoreless with just three rebounds in 14 minutes. He was honored before the game by Timberwolves owner Glen Taylor for his 53 straight double-doubles, a streak that ended against Golden State last week. It is the longest such streak since 1973-74.
Kevin Love set the NBA record for consecutive double-double’s this season and made the All Star team for the first time. Watch out for Minnesota’s power forward as he continues to improve.
The Warriors ended Kevin Love’s double-double streak, holding the Minnesota power forward to six points and 12 rebounds.
Love’s streak ended at 53 games, two short of the 55 double-doubles Elvin Hayes had in 73-74 with the Capital Bullets.
David Lee helped limit Love to a 1-for-6 from the floor.
