Otis Hughley, DeMarcus Cousins’ high school coach and a prominent figure in Alabama prep basketball circles, has been hired as a Kings assistant.

He replaces Bryan Gates, who left after one season for a promotion with the New Orleans Hornets.

Hughley, 46, led Mobile’s LeFlore High School to six consecutive 6A regional tournament appearances and the 2007 state championship. He has also been a college assistant at Wright State, Liberty and Southern.

After six summer league games, the Kings are still looking for guards to invite to training camp.

In the midst of developing rookie centers DeMarcus Cousins and Hassan Whiteside, and monitoring veteran forwards Omri Casspi and Donte Greene, the Kings looked for a guard or two to stand out.

“I think that nobody stood out as kicking down the door of opportunity,” Kings head coach Paul Westphal said. “Let’s put it that way.”

The Philadelphia 76ers traded Samuel Dalembert to the Sacramento Kings for Andres Nocioni and Spencer Hawes on Thursday.

The deal was agreed to on Tuesday night, and the two teams worked out details Thursday morning.

The deal gives the Kings a player they’ve long coveted in Dalembert. The Kings tried to make several deals with the Sixers last year for Dalembert but couldn’t make it happen.

The trade gives the Sixers a physical combo forward in Nocioni and an up-and-coming big man in Hawes.

The Kings are looking for a small forward and Detroit’s Tayshaun Prince could be a viable option.

The Pistons are looking to make some changes and it is believed that either Richard Hamilton or Prince will be dealt.

According to sources, Sacramento is open to trade possibilities. They have the fifth pick in this month’s NBA Draft and they are also looking to accommodate Andres Nocioni’s trade request.

Hedo Turkoglu has privately expressed to league friends a desire to return to the Sacramento Kings.

The Kings and Raptors have yet to engage in trade discussions, sources say, but communication is a likely possibility before the end of the month.

League executives believe Sacramento would need Toronto to minimally take forward Andres Nocioni and the two years, $13.5 million left on his contract.

The result of the final home game of the year for the Kings was secondary. Having Tyreke Evans reach an exclusive milestone was the main goal.

Evans achieved that, although not without plenty of trouble, scoring 24 points to join a club that includes only Oscar Robertson, Michael Jordan and LeBron James in the Kings 117-107 loss to the Houston Rockets.

With only one game remaining in the season, Evans is assured of averaging at least 20 points, five rebounds and five assists a game. Evans joins those three all-time greats as the only rookies ever to reach those marks.
