Cleveland, Golden State and San Antonio also reportedly have expressed interest in Kaman, who has not played since Jan. 23, was inactive on Jan. 25 at Oklahoma City, and was told two days later to stay away from the team as it attempted to negotiate a trade.

The Los Angeles Clippers have agreed to a deal with the league-owned New Orleans Hornets to acquire guard Chris Paul.

The Clippers will send guard Eric Gordon, center Chris Kaman, forward Al-Farouq Aminu and Minnesota’s unprotected 2012 first-round pick to the Hornets for Paul. The Clippers will also receive two future second-round picks.

The deal required the approval of NBA commissioner David Stern, but is expected to be approved Wednesday night, sources said.

But the trade as presented has one hitch: The league, which owns the Hornets, wanted Eric Bledsoe, while the Clippers want to keep their point guard, the source said.

The deal would be done if the league had not asked for Bledsoe, according to the source.

The trade as submitted would cost the Clippers guard Eric Gordon, center Chris Kaman and forward Al-Farouq Aminu. It would also include Minnesota’s first-round draft pick in 2012.

Boston will send Jermaine O’Neal and another player in exchange for West. O’Neal will presumably be flipped by the Hornets to another team.

While West found the market less robust than he was expecting, he will take less money to play for a contender.

NBA owners have pushed David Stern to kill a proposed trade that would send Paul to the Lakers from the NBA-owned Hornets.

Owners were irate with Stern during Thursday’s Board of Governors meeting.

Hornets’ GM Dell Demps received pressure from the NBA to back out of the agreed-upon trade and keep Paul, say sources.

The Rockets were also involved in the trade that was agreed upon in principle. Pau Gasol would have gone to Houston, while Kevin Martin, Luis Scola, Lamar Odom and Goran Dragic were set to be deal to the Hornets.

“WoW,” wrote Chris Paul on Twitter as a response.

Paul will report for Hornets training camp on Friday.

Pau Gasol

The Hornets are engaged in trade talks with the Lakers and Rockets about a three-team trade that would send Chris Paul to Los Angeles and Pau Gasol to Houston, sources said.

The Hornets would receive either Luis Scola or Kevin Martin, and possibly both, as well as draft picks. Houston owns the New York Knicks’ first-round pick from 2012, as well as its own.

The Rockets also have young assets to offer New Orleans in players like Chase Budinger, Patrick Patterson and Jordan Hill.

But the Hornets continue to meet with resistance from the Warriors and the Clippers on Curry and Gordon, sources told ESPN.com, because both teams are reluctant to part with their young backcourt cornerstones with no assurance from Paul that he will stay beyond this season.

Sources said that the Hornets have actually been trying to convince the Warriors to part with Curry since before last season’s trade deadline in February.

The New York Knicks are Chris Paul’s preferred destination, according to sources.

Paul is willing to wait until becoming a free agent next summer to sign with the Knicks.

Paul would also consider signing with the Clippers, but their first is to sign Dwight Howard with their cap space.

David West

“We just felt like this is the best thing for me, to go forward, and I made the decision based on where I was since the the knee (surgery) and all those other things and I felt it was the right time for me to make a good decision,” West told the (New Orleans) Times-Picayune on Monday.

West has a June 30 deadline in his contract to notify the Hornets whether he will invoke next season’s $7.5 million salary or opt for free agency.

Whether Chris Paul remains with the New Orleans Hornets after next season, when he can opt out of his contract and pursue free agency, is not certain.

However, the Hornets did not hurt their chances of keeping him around long-term after extending the two-time defending Los Angeles Lakers to six games in the opening Western Conference playoff series.

After the game, Paul said he saw a positive sign, teammates showing disappointment instead of satisfaction for extending the series when most predicted a Lakers sweep.

“They are most definitely serious about winning,” Paul said. “Guys were devastated, and that’s one thing you always look for.”
